When temps get down into the 40’s at night, I’m breaking out the fleece. So last night, I went in to the bedroom about an hour before we planned to retire for the evening to “pre-heat” my bed. You see, when it’s chilly, I will sometimes turn my side of the heated mattress cover to high for an hour or so, then turn it off when I get into bed — takes that icy chill off the sheets. (Feel free to make a joke about romance if you want. I would.) So, I was surprised when I climbed into bed to find it was still very cold!
When David came in from brushing his teeth I asked him if he had reconnected it earlier in the day when making the bed. I wash sheets on the weekend and the cord plugs into the mattress cover at the foot. He had taken the mattress cover out of the dryer and put it on the bed. He assured me he had plugged it in. I thought, “great — one more thing that isn’t working.” (As I write this, the dishwasher is dying a slow death.)
Well, he pulled back his side of the blankets and crawled in next to me, kissed me goodnight and turned out the light. After a few seconds, he said, “Are you sure you turned on YOUR side of the bed?”
Of course I was sure! The controller for my side hangs by my side of the bed on the hook I devised specifically for that purpose when I custom built our headboard. And the lights — all 5 of them — lit up when I turned it on.
“Well,” he continued, “my side is quite toasty.”
I thought for a second and said, “When you plugged it in, was the plug on the inside of the cover, against the mattress, or outside?”
“Inside,” he said, I had to reach under to plug it in.
“Ah. That explains it. You put it on wrong-side-out.” (thereby, switching the sides)
He then said something about switching sides of the bed for the night — as if I would EVER be able to sleep on the WRONG side of the bed. He knew the answer even before suggesting such an absurd, perverted idea. I just let him lay there and cook while I shivered.
NOPE, the only way to fix it would be to completely un-make and re-make the bed. Or I could wait until this weekend when I wash the sheets again. That’s probably what I’m going to do.
In the meantime, in order to pre-heat the bed, I’ll just have to remember to use HIS controller (assuming it can be found).
And if I get cold during the night, I will just reach clumsily across my sleeping husband to turn on my side of the bed. Of course, I’ll try really hard not to wake him.
(It IS good to know, however, that if my side wears out before his (as will likely happen since he never uses it), I can just put the cover on wrong-side out and switch the controllers. That is useful information!)
