Every week in jail ministry, I encourage the women we meet that once they finish their time and have been “off paper” for a year, they could even come back and minister with us. There are several ladies on our team who have themselves been incarcerated and the connection and impact they have is amazing.
Just like a mother telling her child, “You can be anything you want to be — even the president of the United States!” I tell them that they could come back and help others.
But do I BELIEVE it? Sure! Just like that mother talking to her child. I believe it in the, “I guess ANYTHING is POSSIBLE,” way, but if I’m honest, deep down, I have doubt.
Sure, God has done miracles, but does He still?
Last night, as I walked into the lobby of the jail, I was greeted by a familiar smile. There stood a woman whom I first met a couple of years ago when she was on the inside. Since she finished her time and was released, I have seen her around town several times. She found a great job and is eagerly planning her wedding. And last night, she went in with our team, ministered to the women in jail, and walked back out with us. She is actively involved in ministering to women held in the chains of alcoholism, has turned her own life around, and is now using her experience to help others with our team in jail ministry.
Shame on me for my doubt! I’m glad she saw through my platitudes and chose to have more faith in herself than I did. I serve a God who restores lives, breaks chains, and STILL does mighty miracles.
